So, Spring/Summer’16′s already looking super, what with all we saw on New York Fashion Week’s recent runways – and though the designs themselves have us happily looking forward to next season, we at SPICE are equally infatuated with the models that wore them during the shows.
From top names like Alek Wek, who did her fierce thing at Marc Jacobs’ epic show, to the new ‘It-girls’ and newcomer models, here’s our list of 7 models who pretty much made New York Fashion Week for us – see it below and let us know if your favourite face made the edit too.
1. AAMITO STACEY LAGUM
First up, it’s familiar face, Ms Aamito Stacey Lagum – the Ugandan beauty who was crowned Africa’s Next Top Model in the series’ first ever season back in 2013.
Now well on her way to stardom in the global fashion industry, following her feature in Marc Jacobs’ Autumn/Winter’15 campaign (see it here) and numerous editorials in international mags, the rare beauty was seen closing various shows at NYFW – an amazing compliment and mark of achievement for any model, and one Stacey herself was thrilled with, posting pics to her Instagram and giving thanks to the designers.
Needless to say we at SPICE are in love with the girl and can’t wait to see her make ‘It-girl’ status on the international scene. Go Stacey, go!
2. BINX WALTON
Current ‘It-girl’ (or “bad girl,” as the industry affectionately describes her) and a great one to follow on social media, Binx is still considered new blood in the industry as far as being a supermodel goes, and for good reason – what with the supe doing her rebellious thing online (there are zero Fs given on her Instagram) together with her model bestie Lexi Boling, where the duo are busy shaking up perceptions of the life of a top model.
Looking the true professional she is on the runway though, the unusual beauty was seen at catwalks including Proenza Schouler (above), Tommy Hilfiger, Jason Wu and Diane von Fursetnberg amongst others, where she showed us how she do in her day job with a walk that just can not be topped.
3. IMAN HAMMAM
The whole world loves Iman Hammam and at NYFW, she had us all as tightly-wrapped around her finger as the coils of her curls.
Walking the runways of Marchesa, Tommy Hilfiger, Givenchy and more, she and her mane became chameleons on the ramp, rocking numerous, head-turning styles including loose, wild and straight locks – but Ms Hammam could never shake her signature strut and feline beauty, with the Moroccan-Egyptian model making waves everywhere she went.
4. LINEISY MONTERO
This name’s been on everyone’s lips as the face to watch out for this Fashion Week and for Spring/Summer’16, and we can totally see why.
The Dominican stunner, revered for her cropped ‘fro and cute face, has a beauty that is quite unforgettable; her sharp cheekbones sat high on her face and her almond eyes playing a part in having her booked at DKNY, Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger, Givenchy, Coach and more – a huge start in her modelling career, which began just 6 months ago.
The current star of Prada’s Autumn/Winter’15 campaign (see it, here) has us and the industry fallen hard and we can’t wait to see where else she’ll walk during the rest of Fashion Week.
5. MARIA BORGES
Is that you, Ms Borges? Why, yes it is – and how beautiful you are in your natural hair, looking like a completely different girl altogether!
The Angolan model recently removed her long weave and went for the chop, and has since spoken about the growing interest she’s gathered since joining the Natural Movement, and this season she’s been spied walking for Tome, Zimmerman, Zac Posen, Jeremy Scott and Sophie Theallet amongst others.
Team SPICE can’t deny how much more we love her look – the model’s bringing a serious freshness to the ramp with her natural tresses and cropped ‘do – and we are looking forward to seeing which other designers found her new hair irresistible, too.
6. AYA JONES
Ivorian model, Aya Jones and her big-eyed beauty was spied on lots of catwalks at New York Fashion Week, and with her doll-like charm, it’s easy to see why.
The Paris-based model rocked looks on all the best runways, including Coach’s Vera Wang’s, Altuzarra’s and Oscar de le Renta’s, and we at SPICE have been cheering this newcomer model on, ever since her arrival in the industry at the Spring/Summer’15 shows.
Obviously, this face is one to keep watching over the next few years, but for now we will be excited to see her stomping runways at the rest of Fashion Week.
7. ALEK WEK
And lastly, Team SPICE were thrilled to see veteran supermodel Alek Wek on the ramp, where she made a surprise appearance at Chromat’s Spring/Summer’16 showcase and took her twirl on the red carpet-clad ramp at Marc Jacobs.
The South Sudanese model, who first joined the game in 1995, at age 18, stepped out in sporty separates for Chromat’s show, where fashion met technology, and then wowed with her short-shorts and cherub-embellished ensemble for Mr Jacobs – a brilliant ending to New York Fashion Week, with Alek’s appearance on the ramp being a rarity now that she’s mainly busy with her philanthropy, being a Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR and making spectacular appearances at fashion shows and events designed to raise awareness for good cause.
